My zine is about the Professional Women’s Hockey League that just started this year and the issue for the magazine I will be doing it on is the Toronto Torch.

What design elements change from issue to issue?
The elements that change from issue to issue is the title of the name of the team that will be on the cover, the captain from the first issue on the team will change to the captain on the team the next issue is talking about and the background of the city will change to the city the team the issue is talking about.
What design elements stay the same?
The font title I will be creating for the heading and the other font I will be using for the subheading will stay the same. There will be emphasis on the cover of the magazine and it will be a captain on the team as the main focus and the city in the background behind them. It will also have a border on the edge of the magazine to act like a frame.
How might you sell your Zine visually through its cover design?
The way I will sell my Zine visually through its cover design is by having the emphasis on the team captain from the team the issue is talking about as the main focus and then it draws the viewer’s attention to the title of the magazine when the heading says Professional Women’s Hockey League and then to the team’s name.
My Thinking Process
It is a vector image of a brainstorm bubble.
I had to do some research, find inspiration for the sketches for the versions of my typeface I created, I selected one of the sketches as the typeface to create in illustrator, I recreated it in illustrator, I made a few adjustments from the feedback I got and then I chose one of my digital sketches of my typeface that I created through my illustrator which will be the typeface I will use for my zine. As I was trying to figure out what typeface I wanted to create, I thought about the magazine that I was doing for my Editorial class since this typeface I created will also be created for the magazine that I create.  The magazine I decided to create is the Professional Women’s Hockey League which is an issue about Toronto Torch which helped me decide on what type of typeface I wanted to create for it.

I also had to create a style guide for my zine for the direction I want to take my zine, the flat plan of my zine and a mock up of both the cover and one feature of my zine.  My zine is about the Professional Women’s Hockey League that just started this year and the issue for the magazine I will be doing it on is the Toronto Torch.

For this assignment we were also allowed to use ChatGPT for the information on the magazine since it’s a mockup idea of what the magazine will look like.
Research
The font I want to create for my magazine is a font that is for sports with sharp and curvy edges in the fonts. I was inspired by fonts from sports teams, hockey fonts examples I searched up and the Medieval Times logo. I liked how the inspos are sharp and some have smooth edges as well as a bit of a 3D look to them which I feel will help me express the characteristics and mood of the font I’m creating to express the brand of the magazine I want to create.

Images of inspiration for my fonts which are the font that has the word hockey is in a cursive font, the Toronto FC logo, the Toronto Raptors logo with the raptor in the middle of the logo, the Toronto Maple Leafs logo, the Texas Rangers logo, the Medieval Times ad and the ad saying 100 gaming logos for esports teams and gamers.

Creative Direction Part 1
This slide of the presentation showcases part 1 of my creative direction for my magazine where it has the PWHL logo, I created a logo to be next to the page number, it showcases the Name plate where I use my own font for the magazine, it shows what types of graphic elements, page furniture, endnote as well as the page folio which are the hockey puck, hockey stick, hockey skates and hockey gloves. The images of a hockey player playing hockey, a goalie, hockey skates, the hockey puck, a game playing at a hockey rink and ice rink illustrates how I want my zine to be. It shows all the Typography I will be using whcih are Serif font Rufina Bold for the headings, Sans Serif Anzeigen Grotesk regular font for the Dek, the Serif font Magneta Semi Bold for the Subheading, the Sans Serif font Century Gothic Pro regular font for the body copy and my own type fonts for the heading got the front cover. The colours I will be using are dark blue, light blue, red, purple, white and black colour for my zine.

The margin for the magazine is 0.6875 inches. It showcases the folio treatment where the logo I created will be on the left or right side of the number or the logo will be under the number. I also included the inspiration for the main typeface labelled as body, head, deck etc with general font size and leading part 1 where this is the front of sports magazine of the Toronto Maple Leafs game where two players Austin Matthews and Mitch Marner are on the cover evokes a strong and confident mood.

This page on a sports magazine evokes a interesting and confident mood.

Conclusion

To conclude, this assignment was fun, very interesting and easy to learn to help expand and explore my creative thinking when working on this zine for this assignment.  It has helped me learn how to plan ahead for my zine, how to make important decisions in making my zine to express the mood and feel I want it to express.

This is a vector image of a hockey stick with a hockey puck.
For this project I created a magazine for the PWHL team called Toronto Torch. I first had to do some research to figure out how much would the magazine cost, how many times will the zine be published, what my target audience are and what are the competitors. When I figured that out, I want the messaging for my zine to encourage and inspire young females that the can enjoy playing hockey as well as play hockey on a professional level. I wanted my fonts to be bold, evoke a sense of friendliness, create eye flow movement and attracts the audience's attention. I decided that the colours in the zine will be the same colours that are used on the team to keep it consistent. I then did some research on how to create my own font that would emphasize the the messaging in the zine. I found some inspiration and I created a font where it’s sharp, bold and stands out that it evokes a strong and confident feeling. I then created the creative direction of how I want to design my magazine. Finally, I used images that are related to hockey like the ice rink as the background, the hockey pucks, hockey equipment, images of the Toronto Torch team playing hockey, where they play hockey, the city skyline, I designed the advertisement and I designed the PWHL logo for the magazine. For the information that is in the magazine we were allowed to use Chatgpt for the assignment for Editorial 2 class to create the information for the magazine.
